Activism and Media in Egypt
Seminar organised by International Media Support and Mosireen
Date: June 25th
Time: 10-19
Place: Mosireen, clinic 34 Talaat Harb, disorder 6th floor, apt. 26

In recent years and particularly after the January 25th revolution, a significant force has pushed itself onto the media scene in Egypt, bringing along new conditions for corporate media: activists and other citizens have taken it upon themselves to improve the accessibility of information, forcing new narratives and agendas onto the broader media scene. Through their work, economic and political restrictions on private and state media continue to be called into question. A variety of initiatives have arisen: grassroots campaigns influencing public discussion like Kazeboon and No to Military Trials for Civilians, citizen and community media trying to break the Cairo-centrism of media like in Helwan, and activist collectives creating media content and training others to do the same, like Mosireen.
Journalists from corporate media work under restrictions imposed on them by the state in the form of legal repression, harassment, and lack of access to reliable, official information. Additionally they are faced with ideologically and commercially motivated owners and some media outlets continue to have challenges of making sustainable business models.

The aim of this seminar is to investigate how alternative media initiatives are changing the narratives and agendas of corporate media journalism. The seminar explores relationships between different types of media, considers how new media initiatives help journalists face the challenges of their work, and how activists adapt to the changing media scene.
We seek to inspire a conversation between activists, journalists and academics in order to give all three groups the opportunity to reflect together and benefit from each other’s insight.

Programme
10:00-10:15 Coffee

10:15-10:30 Welcome by Mosireen and International Media Support

10:30-12:30 Panel 1: How is the work of journalists in Egypt changing?

Sensitive and dissenting stories are often broken by activists before corporate media and journalists benefit significantly from the work of activists and alternative media initiatives. Particularly journalists working for dissenting news outlets benefit from the work of activists, not least because many critical and dissenting news outlets have struggled, and are struggling, to find viable business models. How does the work of activists push journalists to uncover and cover stories? How are alternative media initiatives challenging restrictions in corporate media such as (self)-censorship due to pressure from authorities, editorial policies and ownership? Can the presence of activists and alternative media initiatives influence the business models of corporate media?

Moderator: Sara el Sirgany/ Journalist
Panellists:
Liliane Daoud
Lina Attalah/ Journalist
Ramy Aly, Social-Anthropologist and Head of Media Development at the Public Service Broadcasting Initiative
Ramesh Srinivasan, Associate Professor, UCLA Department of Information Studies and Media Arts

12:30-14:00 Lunch

14:00-16:00 Panel 2: How has the role of citizen journalists and activists changed since the 18 days?

When the military stormed Tahrir Square for the first time on February 25th 2011 shortly after the fall of Mubarak, there were no corporate media present in the Square to document the event. Activists and citizen journalists documented this and many other events – from virginity tests to the Maspero Massacre – and forced corporate media to stop turning a blind eye to atrocities caused by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. Today, under the Muslim Brotherhood rule, corporate media have started covering events such as street clashes and other injustices committed by the authorities without activists pushing them to do so. As corporate media are adjusting to the new environment, how has the work of activists remained influential and how do activists continue to shift corporate media agendas and narratives? How has the role of activists shifted in relation to documenting the on-going revolution?

Moderator: Salma Said, Activist, Mosireen
Panellists:
Ahmad Ragab, Journalist
Sanaa Seif, Activist
Mostafa Bahgat Video journalist

16:00-16:45 Coffee break

16:45-18:45 Panel 3: How are audiences changing?

Some activist initiatives have worked to change the relationship between media and audiences, trying to make media work as more than just a tool for transmitting information. Street screenings, graffiti and social media all encourage more participation than conventional forms of mass media. How is people’s understanding of media messages influenced when they are participants in creation and dissemination rather than a more passive audience? What are, or could be, the roles of the audience within politicised media? How does the social space of media perception influence how messages are understood?

Moderator: Sherief Gaber, Activist, Mosireeen
Panelists
Ibraheem Sherief, independent activist
Rasha Azzab, Journalist
Abdel Rahman Mansour, one of the moderators of ‘We are All Khalid Said’ Facebook page

18:45-19:00 Wrap-up
